Museum History
In the late 1960`s a small museum was opened in Devonport Royal Dockyard.
This constituted the third attempt to assemble naval memorabilia and historic artifacts in Devonport.
Previous collections had been destroyed either in the Great Fire of 1840 or in the bombings of the Second World War.
A large collection of artifacts came from the Royal William Victualling Yard  when it closed in 1992.
This ,together with the remains of the original dockyard museum,is now housed in the 19th century Police and Cashier`s Office and the Old Fire Station in the historic South Yard of the Naval Base.
This is the home of the developing Plymouth Naval Base Museum.
